I Need Reading Glasses?

Reading Glasses
Oh man, I can remember when I turned forty; my husband declared that it was all downhill from there. ìYou’ll never use the gas pedal again,î he predicted. Oh pooh, forty is not old. I felt perfectly fine, just like I always had. Well, I am a little older now and my eyes have finally betrayed me. At first, it was just the incredibly tiny print in the phone book but it progressed to the menus in dimly lit restaurants. When I started doing a lot of computer work, it dawned on me that I did indeed need reading glasses.
My ego would not let me to admit it and even though my precious husband told me he found glasses very sexy, I resisted. Let me just say that reading is very important to me and squinting is not very attractive so I got glasses for reading and the printed page became much clearer. I could read the phone book, menus, and tiny price tags. I am no longer squinting at the computer screen and find myself reaching for them a lot more than I expected.
It’s not that I am terribly vain. I think I look pretty good for my age. My former employer was too proud to wear glasses even though he was approaching eighty, so when he needed to see something clearly he reached for magnifying surgical goggles. Well they made this very dapper gentleman resemble Mr. Roboto, but he did not wear glasses. Of course he also told me he disliked Florida because it was for ìold people.î If he is not old, I most certainly am not either.
Of course, having glasses just for reading presents another problem. How the heck to you keep track of them? I refuse to wear one of those icky chain things around my neck, but it is hard to walk around in the reading glasses. When I was working I put them in the pocket of my scrub shirts. Now that I work from home, I just have four or five pair all over the house. Ok, I admit it; I supplemented my reading glasses with some from the dollar store. At a buck a pair, who cares if I lose them, step on them, or one of the dogs eats them? So give in and stop squinting. What would you rather have, reading glasses or wrinkles?
